According to a report out of Greater Spokane Incorporated. "The Worst is Likely Over." But experts caution that road to economic recovery could be bumpy. "Things still aren't great but they're not as bad as they were." While that may not be the enthusiastic vote of confidence that businesses and consumers have been hoping for, it is the general consensus of the local economic experts who contributed to the latest issue of the Business Barometer. Signs indicate that the worst is over, but that doesn't mean we should expect an across-the-board spike in economic activity any time soon. Employment, in particular, will be slow to rebound, which means that consumers will continue their reluctance to spend at pre-recession levels. Declines in many of the areas we track slowed during the third quarter, but there were declines nonetheless. "Things have clearly improved from the worst of times, but individuals need to be realistic that getting the recovery fully in gear will be a slow process," said Steve Scranton, chief investment officer for Washington Trust Bank. "We shouldn't be frustrated or disappointed if it doesn't happen instantly. It's going to be a long process to get back to where people feel really good again."

Americans are watching more TV than ever, says Nielsen. Maybe it’s because the choices have gotten so much better, or the programming is more attractive, or HD makes it more fun to watch, or maybe it’s just because it’s cheaper than most other entertainment these days, but, for whatever reason, television watching is at an all time high in this country. According to Nielsen numbers released last week, Americans now watch an average of 4 hours and 49 minutes of TV a day, including live plus seven day playback viewing. That’s up 4 minutes, or 1.4%, from last year, and up 20% from just a decade ago. The increase is not coming from primetime viewing. Average time spent watching primetime stayed the same, year-over-year, at 1 hour and 12 minutes. And it was the same in 1991. It was the non-primetime dayparts that increased. That makes sense when you consider that DVR playback is likely to take place outside of primetime hours. Average household viewing has also increased this year to 8 hours and 21 minutes per day. Back in 1949-50, when Nielsen first started measuring audiences, the average HH viewing was 4 hours and 35 minutes.

A roaring economic event is going on in Spokane! We are getting an extra 10,000 hotel room nights filled as the four week performance of "Disney's The Lion King" runs through December 6 at the INB Performing Arts Center. This "landmark event in entertainment," as it is called by Newsweek, translated to 15,000 extra room nights when it was in Spokane on a six week run in 2005. To make the package even sweeter, "The Lion King" shows at the height of the holiday shopping season with thousands of visitors in town to take advantage of both. The Broadway League based in New York City calculates that three dollars are spent in the local economy for every dollar spent on a Broadway ticket, making this a multimillion economic dollar boost. Hakuna Matata! No worries!
