Wendell Satre 1918 - 2010

Wendell Satre, former chairman of Washington Water Power Co., has died at the age of 92. Born in Post Falls, Satre earned a degree in engineering from the University of Idaho, the first in his family to graduate from college, and went to work for Washington Water Power (the predecessor of Avista Utilities). He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II then returned to the company for a career that spanned 46 years. He became executive vice president in 1965, took over as the utility's second president in 1971 and was elected chairman in 1975. Throughout his career he made innumerable contributions to the community. He was one of the driving forces behind Expo 74, Spokane's World's Fair, served as chairman of the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce and was one of the founders of Leadership Spokane. He was at the forefront of the plan to build a WSU campus in Spokane and was instrumental in developing Itron, now a global leader in utility technology, as a separate entity from WWP. Satre also served the community through his 40+ year membership in Spokane Rotary Club 21. Services will be announced soon.

The story behind Trader Joe's coming to Spokane

Trader Joe's is the talk of the town, but there's more to the story. All those Trader Joe fans can thank Vandervert Developments for helping make it possible for the popular store deciding to locate in Lincoln Heights on Spokane's south hill. Vandervert Developments, headed by Dick Vandervert, is part of a group that recently bought Lincoln Heights shopping center. The company courted Trader Joe's, along with a number of other competitors, and won because they provided them with a solid plan, a great location and even drawings of how their store would look and fit in to the center. Established in the early 1970's, Vandervert Developments & Hotels has expanded exponentially in most recent years, now owning and managing dozens of development properties throughout the region. Vandervert Development's style, design and quality will revitalize Lincoln Heights shopping center and make it a regional retail destination. For a look at some of their other properties (and how Lincoln Heights will look when they’re finished with it) go to their website www.vandervertdevelopments.com. Thanks Vandervert Developments for bringing Trader Joe's to Spokane!

One of the other champions in the Trader Joe's story is Rick O'Connor, who owns Referee Photo, the business next to Hogan's that will become the western part of Trader Joe's. His willingness to move to a new location had a great deal to do with attracting the Trader Joe's to Lincoln Heights. Without O'Connor’s agreement to relocate, the deal would not have happened. So if you love Trader Joe's being here, go thank Rick O’Connor at Referee Photo.
