Spokane Business & Economic Symposium & Luncheon May 7

Join business leaders from the Inland Northwest at this special event to feature keynote speaker Nick Hanauer, Author, Civic Activist, Venture Capitalist and Entrepreneur. Symposium to be held at the Davenport Hotel, Elizabethan Room, Wednesday, May 7 from 11:30am to 1:30pm. The event will be hosted by PacifiCAD and will benefit a local Spokane charity, Generation Alive.

This symposium is an effort to bring a fresh perspective to Spokane's economic outlook. Mr. Hanauer suggests that we approach the economic difficulties we face with long-term investment in and support for the middle class. He contends that this approach will ultimately pay dividends to all in our economy.

Nick Hanauer is one of the most successful entrepreneurs, investors and managers in the Northwest. Hanauer has managed, founded or financed over 30 companies, creating aggregate market value of tens of billions of dollars, including companies like Amazon.com, Aquantive Inc., and many more. He is co-founder and partner in Second Avenue Partners, a Seattle-based venture capital firm providing management, strategy, and capital for early stage companies. Author of national bestselling books, 'The True Patriot and 'The Gardens of Democracy' with co-author Eric Liu, Hanauer has also made numerous television appearances as commentator on politics and economics in the national media. 100 different kinds of tequila!




A new Mexican restaurant will soon be open at 3029 E. 29th in Lincoln Heights, Miguel's Mexican Restaurant and Tequileria will be in the former Vin Rouge space. The owner is Miguel Amador, who also operates Fiesta Mexicana at 1227 S. Grand. The new 3,000-square-foot restaurant will serve more than 100 different kinds of tequila and have a different menu than Fiesta Mexicana.


STCU opens branch in the Hutton Building




STCU opened its 17th branch location Wednesday in Spokane's historic Hutton Building. The Hutton Branch is located on the street level at 9 S. Washington Street (the corner of Sprague and Washington), where STCU also has completed renovation of the lobby area and a 1,000-square-foot space that's available for lease. An STCU sign atop the seven-story building has brightened the Spokane skyline since January. Plans for later this year call for turning the building's top floor into the new home for STCU commercial lending. The 2,300-square-foot Hutton Branch will have a four-person staff.


Flying Goat to open sister location on south hill

And another new restaurant for Spokane's south hill, The Flying Goat on Northwest Boulevard is planning to open a sister location, called Republic Pi, at the former Vintages/Villaggio location near the intersection of Grand and 29th Avenue sometime in July. Republic Pi plans to serve pizza similar to The Flying Goat, but will have a wood-fire oven instead of a gas oven for a different taste.

NAC Architecture Promotes Staff

NAC Architecture announces the following staff promotions:

Keith Comes, AIA, LEED AP an Architect in NAC Architecture's Spokane office has been promoted to Managing Principal. He is working on projects such as Pullman High School in Pullman, and the City of Redmond Recreation Master Plan in Redmond. Keith has Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degrees from Montana State University and has been with NAC Architecture for 22 years.

Melissa McFadgen, AIA, LEED AP has been promoted to Principal. She is an Architect in NAC Architecture's Spokane office. She recently completed the Phil Snowdon Elementary School in Cheney, and is currently working on the People's Community Center New Aquatic Facility in Tacoma. Melissa is a graduate of Montana State University, with a Bachelor of Environmental Design degree and a Master's of Architecture.

Dan Kurtz, AIA, LEED AP, has also been promoted to Principal. He is an Architect in the Spokane office and is currently managing the Kootenai Health Master Facility Plan, Phase 1 Expansion project in Coeur d'Alene, as well as the Community Hospital of Anaconda Addition and Modernization in Anaconda, Montana. Dan holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Idaho.

Rob Paradiso is a drafter in the Spokane office who has been promoted to Senior Associate. He is currently working on the Ferris High School Modernization and Replacement, as well as the Salk Middle School Modernization for Spokane Public Schools. Rob has an Associate in Applied Science degree in Architectural Technology from Spokane Community College.

Angela Bishop, LEED AP has been promoted to Associate. She is an architect in the Spokane office who is currently working on the Rockwood South Hill Summit Tower project in Spokane, as well as the Pullman High School Renovation and Reconstruction. Angela has a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of Architecture from the University of Idaho.

Brian Love, LEED AP has also been promoted to Associate. He is an architectural technician in the Seattle office who is currently working on the Joe Redington Sr. Junior-Senior High School in Knik, Alaska. Brian has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Rice University.

Katie Fitzpatrick joins Trindera Engineering

Trindera Engineering has hired Katie Fitzpatrick as Business Development Coordinator. She brings more than six years of experience in communication and client development to Trindera. Most recently she was an assistant in University Advancement with Gonzaga University. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Communication from Eastern Washington University.

Spo-Can Council to Host 8th Annual 'Our Kids: Our Business' Luncheon & Training

As part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Our Kids: Our Business is a call to action for a region that supports a successful childhood at every stage of development. This year's Capstone Event will take place at the Spokane Convention Center on Wednesday, April 9th and will be hosted by Robyn Nance, Co-Founder of 'Teen Closet'. This year's keynote address will be given by Laura van Dernoot Lipsky, Founder and Director of the Trauma Stewardship Institute and author of 'Trauma Stewardship: An Everyday Guide to Caring for Self While Caring for Others.' Spokane Central Lions Club presents 'Pancakes 'N More' April 19




Spokane Central Lions Club and Corbin Senior Center presents 'Pancakes 'N More' on Saturday, April 19, from 7:30 am to 10:30 am at the Corbin Senior Center, 827 West Cleveland. Tickets are $7 per person. The Lions Health Screening Van will be on site during the breakfast doing health testing for diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. Spokane Central Lions will have a raffle for many prizes and the grand prize is a $175 Yoke's Gift Card. Raffle tickets are $1 each. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit Central Lions Club Community Activities.

EWI of Spokane Hosts 2014 Spring Conference

EWI of Spokane will host the 2014 Spring Conference April 24-26 at Northern Quest Resort and Casino. Representatives from across the United States and Canada have been invited to attend the conference, and all local professionals are encouraged to attend and enjoy this year's impressive lineup of guest speakers, quality networking, leadership training, and a whole lot of fun!

EWI's Spring Conference will kick off with keynote speaker, Dr. Lisa Brown, Chancellor for Washington State University.
