A new book by Randy Shaw just in time for Christmas

Randy Shaw, popular anchor of KREM 2 News, has a resume that sounds like the 'world's most interesting man.' He is one of the most recognizable faces in the Inland Northwest. A 20+ year veteran of Spokane television news, he has served as the longest running TV news anchorman in local broadcast history with more than 15,000 newscasts. Shaw currently spends more time on TV than any other anchor in the market appearing on KREM news at 5:00, 6:00, 10:00 and 11:00pm.

Shaw has worked as a network correspondent for Mutual Broadcasting and the Associated Press, where he covered three administrations - Ford, Carter and Reagan - and traveled with then Vice President George Bush. He has also covered the visits of Pope John Paul II and Chinese Leader Deng Xiao Peng. During his vast career covering international, national and local news, Randy has garnered more than three dozen individual journalism awards for his work.

A cultural anthropology buff, Randy has participated in two major expeditions to Africa; the first to live with the Kabre Tribe of Togo, the last of the African slave traders, while the second trip was part of a National Geographic expedition to locate the Tamberma Tribe of northern Benin. For his role in those expeditions Randy was awarded a fellowship in the prestigious Explorers Club in New York and carried the Explorer Club flag on the Tamberma expedition.

With all those adventures to share he has written a book, Spring Fever for Any Season which is a fascinating compilation of his own experiences. It is available at amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com. You can contact Randy at rshaw@krem.com.

The FAA reports that STEP will not impact Fairchild AFB

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a study last week determining that the proposed Spokane Tribe Economic Project (STEP) "would not be a hazard to air navigation" around Fairchild Air Force Base. This is the second time the FAA has issued a "no hazard" determination for STEP.

The FAA's determination marks an important milestone, affirming that the project, which will invest more than $400 million to create about 5,000 jobs and an estimated $50 million annual payroll, can provide an immediate boost to the local community while preserving military preparedness. "The Spokane Tribe reached out early in the project planning to local jurisdictions, the Air Force, and the Federal Aviation Administration to ensure any potential impacts to flight operations are identified and either avoided or mitigated," said Spokane Tribal Chairman, Rudy Peone.

The proposed project site is located immediately northwest of the intersection of U.S. Highway 2 and Craig Road and consists of the development of a casino-resort facility, a 300-room hotel, parking structure, retail and commercial uses, a Tribal cultural center, and a Tribal police/fire station.

The STEP project is under review by the Secretary of the Interior. Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, the Interior Secretary must make a 'two-part determination' that the project is in the best interest of the tribe and not detrimental to the community. Gov. Inslee must concur with the Secretary's determination before gaming can occur on the site.
