Gonzaga U hosts Business Week 2013 this week

More than 190 high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors statewide are gathering at Gonzaga University this week through Saturday, July 13 to learn more about business principles during the 37th annual Business Week 2013, co-sponsored by Gonzaga and the Association of Washington Business.

The Healthcare Pathway program, which runs parallel to the traditional Business Week program at Gonzaga, is in its seventh year. Business and healthcare executives statewide will introduce students to the worlds of business and healthcare and guide them through intense marketing and clinic competitions in which the students will act as executives in their own mock organizations. Students will give presentations to stockholders/board of directors, and conduct Trade Shows from 9:30am to noon Friday in Cataldo Hall. The students will design, create and exhibit to 'investors' a new product or service and use their creativity to draw Trade Show judges to their booths and get them to invest in their companies and clinics.

Chris Stevens, assistant professor of business entrepreneurship and director of Gonzaga's Hogan Entrepreneurial Leadership Program, is welcoming the students. Speakers scheduled to address the students this week included Alyssa Norwood, vice president of operations for Biking Billboards; Mike Egan, director of government affairs for Microsoft; Cecil Jackson, founder of the nonprofit Jackson Sports Academy; and Joe Albert, co-founder of Gonzaga's Comprehensive Leadership Program and associate professor of organizational leadership.

Most of the large-group presentations and meetings will take place in the Globe Room at Cataldo Hall. Small-group discussions and activities will be held in 'company rooms' in the St. Catherine and St. Monica residence halls. Students attend the event through scholarships provided by businesses. The Association of Washington Business solicits corporate sponsorships for the scholarship program throughout the year.

Students are joined by high school teachers, company advisers and speakers who discuss a variety of business and healthcare-related topics.

Every summer for the past 30 years, Gonzaga has been the Eastern Washington site of this summer program, which serves as a model for similar programs in more than two dozen states as well four cities in Poland. The week concludes with a dance Friday evening.

New from Valpak

Valpak is introducing a special Augmented Reality feature on The Blue Envelope for two months during August and September that provides consumers with a new and fun way to find local coupons in their area. Available with Valpak mobile apps on iOS and Android, consumers can open the Valpak mobile app to scan the envelope and see nearby offers displayed on their screen. This new feature expands mobile reach for Valpak advertisers, and gives them the added bonus of attracting nearby customers at the same time they're ready to make a purchase.

Consumers will first download the Valpak app onto their smartphone, tap the AR icon, and then scan the envelope. When the AR feature launches, consumers can hold their phone up to the horizon and view nearby businesses that offer a Valpak coupon. The app launches the smartphone's camera and uses GPS to overlay a set of 3D icons in real-time, showing available Valpak coupons in the vicinity. As they scan their surroundings, ads literally 'pop up' on the screen so that the consumer can see what offers are around them within a radius of 5 feet to 25 miles away.

Initially, the AR feature will only be accessible on the Valpak envelope. In cooperation with the USPS, this national promotion is designed to raise awareness about how emerging technologies can be integrated with a print strategy to enhance the value of direct mail. The promotion offers a 2% postage discount that will result in postage savings for the Valpak network.

Designed to resonate with a younger, more mobile-savvy audience, the augmented reality experience also increases user engagement with mobile content, and leverages Valpak's print-to-digital strengths.

In addition, participating in this promotion will create national publicity for Valpak and local advertisers when the Valpak press release is sent to the media on July 9.
