Providence expands maternity center at Holy Family

Providence Holy Family Hospital is preparing a major remodel and expansion of its Family Maternity Center. Construction will begin just after the first of the year, with phase one completed by July 2013, and a second phase completed in early 2014.

The $9.5 million construction project allows Holy Family to remodel space on the second floor of the hospital's tower while continuing to serve obstetric patients in the adjacent maternity unit. In July 2013, the newly designed space will open, and renovation will begin on the existing area.

Holy Family's "LDRP" model--which allows women to experience labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum care in one room--is unique to Spokane and was well ahead of its time when originally crafted in the 1980s. The project will keep this model in place while increasing the size of the rooms to allow for today's technology and care delivery needs.

Upon completion, Holy Family will have 16 larger LDRP rooms, four ante/post-partum rooms, three triage rooms and a nursery with five specialty care nursery bassinets. The expansion will add 124 square feet to each of the single-room maternity suites, providing greater comfort for mothers and their families, and better space to provide clinical care when needed.

In addition, many moms choose to have several family members present during labor and delivery. The new rooms have been designed to provide a comfortable, welcoming environment for the mother and her family.

Each year, the physicians and staff at Holy Family Hospital welcome more than 1,200 newborns into the world. "This project will ensure that patients continue to experience the same great care they have had in the past in a birthing center that provides a home-like setting with safe, quality care," says Elaine Couture, chief executive of Providence Sacred Heart and Holy Family.
