Rainmaker adds graphic designer Alexis Roizen

Spokane and Coeur d'Alene marketing company, Rainmaker Creative, has added some fresh talent to their staff. Alexis Roizen has taken on the role of Visual Communication Designer for the company, which caters exclusively to small businesses in the region.

As a University of Idaho student, she combined her inherent love of graphic design with a degree in Public Relations. Since those early days, she has freelanced as a graphic artist while also running a successful start-up business with her sister. The two design products for the iPad, including apps and illustrated e-books.

Since completing her degree, Alexis worked as a Senior Graphic Designer at Coeur d'Alene's IMGX Kreative. She has also completed a year of a Master's Degree with the Academy of Art University.

Marianne Guenther Bornhoft honored

Congratulations to Marianne Guenther Bornhoft. She has received the 2011 Applebee's Community Partner award. Marianne is a local Realtor for Windermere Manito. This year, Applebee's and The Windermere Foundation partnered for a series of auctions to sell their memorabilia to make way for the new updated restaurant design. All of the money raised went back into our local community. Marianne is also running unopposed for president elect of the Spokane Association of Realtors.

iPhone 4S debuts at Apple store

People lined up by the hundreds at the Apple store downtown last Friday morning for the release of the new iPhone 4S. The 4S looks the same as the current iPhone but has a built-in personal assistant feature and an improved camera.

In more news about Apple, the European Brand Institute has announced that Apple is the most valuable global brand, beating Coca Cola for that distinction. Apple topped the list with a brand value of $96 billion in a study of more than 3,000 companies in 24 countries. Microsoft is third and Google fourth.


Spokane YWCA Announces 2011 Women of Achievement

Six extraordinary Spokane women will be honored for their leadership and service to the community on November 2 during the 29th annual YWCA Women of Achievement Benefit Luncheon. The luncheon will be held at the Spokane Convention Center Ballrooms, 334 West Spokane Falls Blvd., from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm.

The honorees were selected from nominations submitted by community members in six categories. The 2011 award winners are:
- Joanne Moyer, community leader and historic preservation advocate: Arts and Culture.
- Marcia Bond, owner, Luna Restaurant: Professional
- Lisa Matteson-Coleman, teacher, Havermale High School On-Track Academy: Education

River Park Square's First Annual Battle of the Chefs is Saturday

River Park Square teams up with merchant, Oil & Vinegar, to host the First Annual Battle of the Chefs, Saturday, October 22nd from 2 to 4 pm. The event concept was created on the premise of popular television shows such as 'Iron Chef', 'Top Chef', and 'Chopped'. The event will also include a venue for community giving, consisting of a cake display open for public voting, with all cash donation votes benefiting the local Second Harvest Food Bank.

Six of River Park Square's finest chefs compete for first place in an hour cook-off requiring two secret ingredients. Executive Chefs Josh Stidman (Twigs), Kevin Anderson (Oil & Vinegar), Dale Fruin (Cruisers), and Tim Simpson (Rock City Grill), Mr. Chung (Sushi Maru) and Javauna Hollowell (P.F. Chang's) will be battling their flavorful talents. A panel of three judges including Chef Doug Fisher, head of the Inland Northwest Culinary Academy (INCA) chef program at Spokane Community College, Tiffany Harms, food critic for The Inlander, as well as a local favorite media personality from KHQ.

AAF Spokane luncheon this week

Salvation Army to hold rally to save Sally's House

Join supporters of the Salvation Army of Spokane for a rally to support the saving of Sally's House, the foster emergency shelter. Sally's House is on the chopping block for the Governor's next session of budget cuts in November. The rally will be held this Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 4:30 - 5:15 pm at The Salvation Army, Sally's Park, Indiana Avenue & Ruby.

Sally's house is a safe haven for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect and abandonment or criminal activity. While at Sally's house, children receive clothing, toys, nutritious meals, and do various activities and field trips. Children remain for up to 90 days or until a relative or appropriate foster placement is found. Since 2002, Sally's House has taken in more than 1600 children.

The rally is being held before the Townhall Meeting with Susan Dreyfus at DSHS on 8517 E. Trent the same day at 5:30. Attendees are encouraged to attend the Townhall meeting as well. Coffee, hot chocolate and popcorn will be served.

Harvest Moon Auction & HalloWine Tasting

The Inland Northwest Business Travel Association's (INBTA) 8th Annual Harvest Moon Auction & HalloWine Tasting is Friday, October 28 from 5:30 to 9:00pm at the Mirabeau Park Hotel & Convention Center, 1100 N Sullivan Road in Spokane Valley. The event will benefit the Northwest North Pole Adventures (NNPA) 'Spokane Fantasy Flight' and the INBTA's scholarship fund.

NNPA is a non-profit organization that provides the Spokane Fantasy Flight, a magical trip to the North Pole for 60+ underprivileged kids aged 4-10 chosen from the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene area shelters.

Tickets are $45 and include wine tasting, dinner and dessert. Auction items include travel packages, hotel stays, wine baskets, spa packages, jewelry, restaurant gift certificates, show tickets, artwork and other regional favorites. Hire Ability Day is tomorrow

Hundreds of local business owners, managers and leaders will gather at noon tomorrow at The Davenport Hotel in downtown Spokane to hear a positive economic message while recognizing the value of hiring individuals with developmental disabilities during the 8th Annual Hire Ability Day luncheon event. Keynote speaker Cary Griffin, senior partner with Griffin-Hammis Associates, will discuss the positive economic benefits of hiring individuals with development disabilities. Griffin is also co-director of the U.S. Department of Labor's National Self Employment Technical Assistance, Resources and Training project with Virginia Commonwealth University.

Hire Ability Day 2011 begins tomorrow morning at 9 am, with 17-20 job seekers going to different workplaces throughout Spokane for a Morning on the Job experience. Each participant, accompanied by a job coach, will tour a job site and learn about the business from a host or guide representing the company. Last year four individuals were hired due to Morning on the Job experiences. Since 2004, Hire Ability Day events have resulted in 29 individuals being hired by local businesses. Several businesses are currently seeking to match a position with a potential employee.
