Here is a special opportunity for business people to apply for a Month-Long Professional Exchange to India. Rotary Clubs in our area are seeking four outstanding professionals, preferably age 25-40, to visit Bangalore, India from January 30th to March 2, 2012, as part of the Group Study Exchange program of The Rotary Foundation. Applicants must have two years professional experience. The purpose of the Group Study Exchange is to promote international understanding and goodwill through person-to-person contact.

97th Annual Spokane Tribal Pow Wow in Wellpinit

The Spokane Tribe's annual Pow Wow held on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Wellpinit, Washington is scheduled to begin on September 1, and run through September 5. With the cancellation of the Riverfront Park Pow Wow held in downtown Spokane, sponsored by the area Tribes including the Spokane Tribe, has led to some confusion regarding the Pow Wow held in Wellpinit. The 'Wellpinit Pow Wow' also known as the 'Spokane Tribal Pow Wow' will be held in Wellpinit on the Spokane Indian Reservation beginning September 1.

The Pow Wow will kick off with the coronation of the Spokane Tribal Royalty and children's Pow Wow at 7:00pm on Thursday, September 1st. Traditional dancing, singing and drumming will continue at the Wellpinit Fairgrounds through Monday, September 5th. Other activities will include food vendors, arts/crafts vendors, traditional tribal stick games and a live auction. The Spokane Tribe's Annual Indian Art Auction will begin at 4pm on Saturday, September 3rd.

The tribal event is free of charge and open to the public.

New LED lighting technology making a difference

Kathleen Sullivan's energy efficient lighting company, FGI (Forever Green Illumination), specializes in retrofitting existing business lighting to get the old 'high energy' lighting out and the newer technologies in. They are trying to get businesses to understand the necessity of removing the old incandescent and halogen lamps and even the CFL (the compact fluorescent 'twisty' lamps) due to high energy consumption as well as lead and mercury content of the CFL's. The new LED technology is a more pleasing light, has no harmful lead or mercury and has a life of around 10 years before needing to change the light bulb again. You can replace a 100w light bulb with one that uses 12watts. At 10 cents per watt for Spokane energy (and climbing), you can only imagine the difference on the utility bills. They believe that if you change a bulb, you can change the world.

As a result of a retrofit, The Italian Kitchen restaurant is saving over 25,000 kWh of electricity due to changing all their lighting to LED. Bryce Kerr, the owner of the restaurant is committed to making his restaurant more 'green' as well as reducing his energy consumption annually. He's already seeing savings of over $400 per month on his electricity bill as well. The changes he has committed to in terms of carbon footprint reduction are the equivalent of removing 5 cars from the road. The company has also done retrofits for Solo Design Studio, a hair salon in the W. 1st area and the Cataldo Investments Building at 111 Cataldo for their common areas. All of them are saving money and helping keep Spokane 'green.'
