Mirabeau Park Hotel 'Best in the NW League'

A survey among the eight play-by-play baseball broadcasters in the Northwest League in 2010 has revealed their thoughts on the best team hotel in the league. The Top-3 hotels were all separated by just six voter points in the poll, but the Mirabeau Park Hotel and Convention Center took the top mark. For years, teams stayed downtown Spokane but now they prefer the Mirabeau. One broadcaster mentioned - "Best hotel in the league, bar none."

Local Women of Achievement to be Honored

The YWCA of Spokane will again honor local women who excel in their field of expertise and whose achievements have had a powerful effect on our community with the 2011 YWCA Women of Achievement Awards. The awards will be presented in up to six categories at the annual Women of Achievement Benefit Luncheon on November 2, 2011.

The YWCA is now seeking nominations in the categories of Arts and Culture; Volunteer Community Service; Education; Social & Racial Justice; Professional and Young Woman of Achievement (high school senior, graduating in 2012). In addition to a record of exemplary service and leadership, nominees also embody the mission of the YWCA through dedication to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Nominations will be accepted through the deadline of June 30, 2011.

The 29th annual YWCA Women of Achievement Benefit Luncheon will feature the inspirational true story of Erin Gruwell, president of the Freedom Writers Foundation. As portrayed by Hilary Swank in the 2007 motion picture "Freedom Writers," Gruwell successfully transformed her students' lives from gang violence, juvenile detention and drugs into a story of hope and opportunity in Long Beach, California. By fostering an educational philosophy that values and promotes diversity, her message inspires her audiences to become a catalyst for positive change. The luncheon will be held on November 2 in the Spokane Convention Center. For a Women of Achievement nomination form or more information about the luncheon, call 509-789-9304 or visit www.ywca.org/spokane.
